Oct. 2016 – Dear Friends of the Algebra Project, you may know that Paul Shields, a mathematician, educator, and a champion of mathematics literacy who volunteered with the Algebra Project at Lanier High School in the early 2000s, passed recently. His daughter, Ruth, shared Paul’s obituary in an earlier post and encouraged us to share it with the network. We are grateful to Paul’s family that among the ways they suggest folks celebrate Paul’s life, includes supporting the Algebra Project. We hope to honor Paul’s “lifetime interest in working to reduce racism and promote educational equality” through the Algebra Project’s ongoing initiatives with students, teachers, schools, communities and partner organizations around the country. Warmly, the AP team.
